1922 Community Series - Chieff Bosompra
Meet Chieff, a dynamic entrepreneur based in Toronto, actively involved in various businesses. Let's dive into the interview!
Impressive Beginnings:
Chieff, your achievements at such a young age are remarkable! As the founder of the successful marketing agency, Undisposable, and owner of the popular burger joint, Aunty Lucy's, could you share when you first embraced entrepreneurship and the journey that led you there?
Chieff: Growing up, I was always drawn to the idea of being my own boss and making money doing things I loved. My first taste of entrepreneurship came in high school when friends and I sold CDs, DVDs, and T-shirts. My passion for pop culture, music, and fashion grew during that time. When I went to university at Carleton U in Ottawa, I kicked things up a notch, with everything being a trial-and-error process. It usually starts with me liking a product or service, thinking, "It would be cool if I had my own version of this," and then giving it a try.
Navigating Challenges:
Throughout your entrepreneurial journey, were there moments when you considered quitting? If so, how did you overcome these challenges and keep moving forward?
Chieff: Many times in my early twenties, I contemplated quitting and opting for a stable 9-5 job. However, I reminded myself that perseverance is crucial. Continuing to push forward, try, and improve is key. It has proven true to this day. Additionally, I find consulting enjoyable as it provides insights into corporate life while maintaining the freedom I've grown to appreciate.
Alternate Career Path:
If not an entrepreneur, what other career path would you have explored?
Chieff: If not an entrepreneur, I'd likely be an account executive or director at a Creative Agency. I was on that path in my early twenties before venturing into freelancing and entrepreneurship. I have a deep appreciation for brand partnerships and overall brand building; it's enjoyable depending on the types of brands you work with.
Cannabis and Relaxation:
How does cannabis play a role in your life, both personally and professionally?
Chieff: In my earlier years, I used to smoke out of boredom, but as I delved into the business world, it became a stress reliever. I often use it to unwind after a hectic day or to stimulate creativity. The calming aspects of cannabis appeal to me.
Leadership Traits:
In your opinion, is there a particular personality trait or daily habit every leader should possess?
Chieff: Remaining level-headed has been crucial for me and is a trait shared by leaders I admire. Staying calm in stressful situations ensures making smart decisions. As a leader, your composure sets the tone for your team, guiding them through challenges.
Advice for Starters:
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in entrepreneurship?
Chieff: Research your chosen field thoroughly, consider hiring a consultant, and don't fear trying and failing. Failure is a valuable teacher, providing insights for your next project.
Future Aspirations:
Undisposable excels in various areas. Are there any unexplored realms you'd like to expand into?
Chieff: I'm content with the expertise we offer. However, I envision Undisposable becoming the "Agency of Record" for companies and corporations, handling all their creative work, from design to event coordination. This step would allow us to further develop our talent and enhance our clients' creative and strategic capabilities.
